Free Activities for Grandkids in Westchester County, NY
Westchester has more free grandkid-friendly options than most people realize — parks, nature centers, libraries, and beaches that cost nothing to enter. Here's the grandparent guide.
Westchester County is expensive to live in. It doesn’t have to be expensive to visit with grandkids.
There’s a long list of free venues in Westchester — parks, nature centers, historic grounds, and library programs — that most people outside the area don’t know about. Some of these are genuinely excellent. Here’s the grandparent-specific guide to free days in Westchester.
Rockefeller State Park Preserve
This is the best free outdoor option in Westchester, and it’s not particularly close. The Rockefeller preserve in Sleepy Hollow covers 1,400 acres with wide, flat carriage roads designed for easy walking — stroller-accessible, walker-friendly, and beautiful in every season.
The trails are wide enough that grandkids can run ahead and you can still see them. The terrain is gentle. And the views of the Hudson Valley are exactly what you’d want from a good outdoor morning.
Grandparent tips:
- The parking lot is free on weekdays; small fee on weekends in peak season
- Stick to the main carriage roads for the easiest walking; they’re clearly marked
- Bring snacks — there’s no food inside the preserve
- Best seasons: fall (foliage) and spring (wildflowers)
Kensico Dam Plaza
The Kensico Dam in Valhalla is an underused gem. The park at the base of the dam is a huge, flat, open green space — ideal for grandkids who need to run — and the dam itself is an impressive backdrop.
Free admission, free parking, and one of the largest open spaces in Westchester. Frisbee, kite flying, a picnic, or just walking around. Works for almost any age range.
Grandparent tip: The open field is exposed and gets windy; bring an extra layer if the weather is uncertain.
Greenburgh Nature Center
The Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale is a small but excellent nature center with live animals, nature trails, and hands-on exhibits. Admission is low (under $10 for most visitors) and the grounds are always free to walk.
The indoor exhibits have live turtles, snakes, and other animals that fascinate young grandkids without requiring a long attention span. The trails are short and manageable — this is a 90-minute stop, not a full-day commitment.
Grandparent tip: Weekday visits are quiet. Weekend afternoons in summer can get busy with school groups and families.
Larchmont Manor Park and Beach
Residents of Larchmont and Mamaroneck have free beach access here; non-residents pay a small day-use fee. But the park grounds, the walking path along the water, and the views of the Sound are accessible to everyone at no charge.
Good for a morning walk with toddlers or an afternoon sitting on the waterfront. The beach itself is calm water — good for young grandkids who want to wade without dealing with surf.
Library Programs (Free, Statewide)
The Westchester Library System runs children’s programming at branches across the county — storytimes, craft sessions, and drop-in events. Almost all of it is free and no-registration.
The best way to find programs near you: check the individual library’s website or the Westchester Library System calendar. White Plains Public Library, Scarsdale Public Library, and Mamaroneck Public Library all run consistent weekday morning programming for ages 2–6.
Grandparent tip: Call ahead to confirm schedule — library programming can change week to week.
Tibbetts Brook Park
Yonkers has its own underrated park option in Tibbetts Brook. The park has a pool complex in summer (small admission) and free walking paths, picnic areas, and open green space year-round. It’s well-maintained and easy to navigate.
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
The largest park in Westchester, up in Cross River. Free admission (small parking fee). Miles of trails, a trailside museum, and the kind of real forest that kids from the suburbs don’t always get to experience.
Worth the drive if you have grandkids who are comfortable walking — this is more of a hiking destination than a casual stroll. The Trailside Nature Museum inside the park is free and good for younger kids.
