Things to Do with Grandkids in Huntington, NY

Huntington is one of Suffolk County's most activity-rich towns for grandkids — Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery, a walkable harbor, good ice cream, and strong library programming.

Grandkids Guide ·

Huntington is one of the better grandkid towns on Long Island, and the main reason most people don’t know it is that the best stop — Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery — is consistently underrated. Beyond that, you have a genuinely walkable harbor, a small art museum that doesn’t overstay its welcome, and the Vanderbilt Museum nearby for older grandkids who can handle a longer stop. Huntington rewards grandparents who are willing to string together a few smaller destinations rather than looking for one big anchor.

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery

This is one of the most underrated grandkid stops on Long Island. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery is a working fish hatchery that has operated since 1883, and it is genuinely excellent for grandkids ages 2–10. Kids can feed the trout directly from food dispensers at the outdoor tanks — the fish are large and aggressive about the pellets, which is thrilling at age four. The indoor aquarium building has native turtles, snakes, frogs, and a large tank of freshwater fish that holds attention well.

Admission is low — typically $5–7 per person, under 3 free — and the whole experience runs 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on how long you let the kids stand at the feeding tanks. It never feels rushed or overwhelmed. On a weekday, you may have the place almost to yourself.

The grounds are manageable for strollers. The outdoor tanks are at kid-height. The staff are accustomed to explaining things to young visitors. This is the kind of stop that grandkids talk about afterward — the feeding tanks specifically make a strong impression.

Grandparent notes:

  • Check weather before going; the outdoor tanks are the main event and a rainy day diminishes it
  • No reservations needed; walk-in is fine
  • There is a small gift shop with fish food available for purchase beyond the dispenser coins
  • The property sits on a pond with a short nature trail that adds time if you want it

Huntington Harbor and Waterfront

Huntington’s harbor area is walkable and pleasant in a low-key way. The main drag near the water has restaurants, ice cream, and views of the harbor. It’s not a destination on its own, but it’s a natural lunch and ice cream stop after Cold Spring Harbor.

The waterfront area is stroller-friendly. If you have younger grandkids who need to move after a contained museum experience, walking along the harbor gives them open space without requiring you to drive anywhere. The boats in the harbor maintain kid interest for at least a few minutes, which buys you lunch.

The ice cream situation: Soft Scoops in Huntington and a few other local spots near the harbor do the job. Nothing you’ll drive across the island for, but solid after a morning of fish feeding.

Heckscher Museum of Art

The Heckscher Museum is a small art museum in Heckscher Park, free admission for children under 12. It’s not a grandkid destination in the way that Cold Spring Harbor is — the collection is focused on American and European paintings and works better for adults — but it’s manageable in short doses and the park surrounding it is excellent.

Heckscher Park itself has a pond, mature trees, open lawns, and a playground. If you want to add outdoor time to a Huntington visit, the park is a good 30-minute stretch stop. The museum adds 20–30 minutes if the grandkids are in a receptive mood; skip it if they’re not.

Huntington Township Parks

Huntington has good park infrastructure beyond Heckscher. Manor Field Park in Huntington Station has open fields and playground equipment. West Hills County Park in Melville has miles of trails through preserved land — appropriate for older grandkids who can handle uneven terrain, and used heavily by equestrians (which is a visual bonus for kids who respond to horses).

West Hills is a meaningful nature experience if you have a few hours and grandkids old enough to hike without carrying. The trails are marked and the park is well-maintained.

Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium (for Older Grandkids)

The Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport — about a ten-minute drive from Huntington village — is worth knowing about for grandkids 8 and up. The property was William K. Vanderbilt II’s estate, and what he built there is genuinely eccentric: a Spanish Revival mansion, marine specimen hall with fish and ocean artifacts collected on his global voyages, and a planetarium.

For younger grandkids, the estate is too much; the rooms don’t invite exploration in the way a science museum would. But for an older grandkid with any curiosity about history, natural history, or astronomy, the combination of the specimen hall and planetarium show holds up well. Planetarium shows are timed and worth booking ahead.

Library Storytimes

Huntington Public Library has strong children’s programming — storytimes, craft programs, and seasonal events that are free and don’t require registration in most cases. For grandparents with toddler or preschool-age grandkids, this is a reliable weekday morning option that doesn’t require planning much beyond checking the schedule.

A Practical Huntington Day

A good Huntington day: Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery in the morning (open at 10 AM), lunch at the harbor with ice cream, then either Heckscher Park for outdoor time or a short drive to the Vanderbilt if older grandkids are in the group. That’s a full day that costs under $30 for two adults and two grandkids.

The fish hatchery genuinely carries the day. Don’t skip it in favor of something with more name recognition — it outperforms its reputation consistently.
