Things to Do with Grandkids in Rye, NY: The Complete Guide

Rye has Playland, a beach, a nature center, and one of the best waterfront parks in Westchester. Here's the grandparent guide to making the most of a day in Rye.

Grandkids Guide ·

Rye is one of the better grandkid destinations in Westchester County — and the main reason is Playland. But there’s more here than the amusement park. Rye has a beach, a nature center, and Rye Town Park, which is one of the nicer waterfront parks on Long Island Sound. If you’re taking grandkids to Westchester for a full day, Rye is worth the trip.

Rye Playland

Playland is the anchor. It’s a real amusement park — a historic one, in operation since 1928 — with rides calibrated for every age range from toddlers to teenagers. The Dragon Coaster. The carousel. The kiddie section for the youngest grandkids. The bumper cars that everyone actually likes.

What makes Playland work especially well for grandparent-grandkid outings is that the pace is right. Unlike Six Flags or Disney properties, Playland is a scale that doesn’t overwhelm. You can do the whole park in half a day, take a break for food, and still have energy left for the beach.

Grandparent tips:

  • Playland is seasonal (mid-May through Labor Day); check the calendar before planning
  • Weekday mornings are significantly less crowded; consider a Tuesday or Wednesday
  • The park is free to enter; you pay per ride or buy a wristband
  • The kiddie section is physically separated — useful if you’re managing multiple ages
  • Parking is ample and priced reasonably for a Westchester attraction
  • The Playland Boardwalk itself is beautiful; worth a walk even if you only do a few rides

Rye Town Park

Adjacent to Playland is Rye Town Park, which includes a managed beach on Long Island Sound. The water is calm, the beach is well-maintained, and the park has picnic areas with covered pavilions.

For grandkids who want water but aren’t ready for ocean surf, Rye Beach is exactly right. The Sound is calmer than the open ocean — you can sit on the edge and watch them wade without worrying about waves.

Grandparent tip: The beach gets busy on summer weekends. Weekday mornings in late spring or early fall are the sweet spot.

Marshlands Conservancy

A short drive from Playland: Marshlands Conservancy is a 150-acre nature preserve with hiking trails, a small nature museum, and spectacular views of Long Island Sound. Free admission.

The trails are flat and manageable. The nature museum inside has live exhibits that work well for younger grandkids. This is a 45-minute-to-90-minute stop that pairs well with a morning at Playland — wind down with a nature walk and picnic.

Grandparent tip: The museum building is unstaffed on some weekdays. Call ahead to confirm it’s open if indoor exhibits are the priority.

Rye Nature Center

The Rye Nature Center is a small but well-run nature education facility with live animals, nature programs, and walking trails through wetland and forest habitat. Modest admission fee. Good for ages 3–10.

The programs are genuinely good if you can time a visit around scheduled activities — check the calendar on their website. The trails behind the center are easy walking and usually quiet on weekday mornings.

Downtown Rye

For a slower pace: downtown Rye has a walkable main street with good lunch options. After a morning at Playland or the beach, lunch in downtown Rye is a comfortable transition to a quieter afternoon. No specific grandkid destination downtown, but it’s a pleasant place to eat and walk.

Planning a Full Day in Rye

A well-structured Rye day with grandkids:

  1. Morning (9 AM–noon): Playland (fewer crowds, cooler temperatures)
  2. Lunch (noon–1 PM): Pack a picnic for Rye Town Park, or grab lunch in downtown Rye
  3. Afternoon (1–3 PM): Rye Beach or Marshlands Conservancy walk
  4. Departure: Beat the afternoon traffic out of Westchester

This structure works for ages 3–12 without anyone getting too tired or too bored.
