Things to Do with Grandkids in Chappaqua, NY

Chappaqua is quiet, beautiful, and underrated for grandkid outings — with Gedney Park, Rockefeller State Park Preserve, a beloved bookshop, and the Kittle House Inn.

Grandkids Guide ·

Chappaqua is one of Westchester’s most pleasant towns for grandparents — small, unhurried, with excellent nature access and a handful of venues that reward slower, more attentive visits. The Rockefeller State Park Preserve is minutes away and one of the best carriage-road walking destinations in the region. Gedney Park has open lawns and a pond. And Scattered Books, a beloved independent bookshop, is the kind of place where grandkids and grandparents can both spend an hour without anyone getting restless.

This isn’t a full-day itinerary town on its own, but paired with Pleasantville (just south) or a morning at Rockefeller State Park, it’s an excellent half-day or full-day combination.

Top Picks

Rockefeller State Park Preserve

One of the finest walking destinations in all of Westchester — 1,400 acres of former Rockefeller estate land with wide, flat carriage roads that work equally well for strollers, slow walkers, and energetic kids. The trails wind through meadows, forests, and past the Swan Lake overlook. No cars inside the preserve; just the paths, the trees, and the sound of the creek. Free to enter; nominal parking fee.

The Visitor Center at the Pleasantville entrance has maps and restrooms. Allow at least 90 minutes.

Gedney Park

Chappaqua’s main park — open lawns, a pond, woodland trails, and a picnic area. Quieter and less trafficked than larger Westchester parks, which is part of the appeal for grandparents who prefer a calmer environment. The pond is popular for fishing with older grandkids. Free to enter; free parking.

Chappaqua Performing Arts Center

A small, well-regarded community theater that programs children’s shows, family concerts, and seasonal performances throughout the year. The facility is intimate — no bad seats. Check the calendar before visiting; when the right show is on, it’s an excellent 90-minute outing for grandkids ages 5 and up. Reserve in advance; performances sell out.

The Kittle House Inn

A historic inn and restaurant set in an 1836 farmhouse. The dining room is formal enough that grandparents feel appropriately dressed, relaxed enough that well-behaved grandkids are comfortable. The menu is American with a strong local sourcing emphasis. The patio is lovely in warm weather. Good for a proper lunch after a Rockefeller State Park morning. Reservations recommended.

Scattered Books

Chappaqua’s independent bookshop — 4.8 stars, beloved by the community, with a strong children’s section and a browsing atmosphere that rewards unhurried visits. For grandparents who enjoy a real bookstore, this is the kind of place that still exists in a few select towns. Let the grandkids pick something; it’s the kind of gift they remember longer than a toy.

Practical Notes

Parking: Free throughout Chappaqua village. Rockefeller State Park Preserve charges a nominal parking fee.

Best full-day plan: Rockefeller State Park Preserve (morning) → Kittle House Inn (lunch) → Scattered Books → Frannie’s Goodie Shop.

If there’s a show: Chappaqua PAC → Gedney Park → Frannie’s Goodie Shop.

Age range: The park trails and bookshop work for all ages. Kittle House Inn is better for grandkids 5+ who can sit through a proper restaurant meal.
