Things to Do with Grandkids in Ossining & Pleasantville, NY

Teatown Lake Reservation, Rockefeller State Park, Jacob Burns Film Center — two of Westchester's quietest towns hold some of its best grandkid destinations.

Grandkids Guide ·

Ossining and Pleasantville sit in the Croton and Saw Mill River valleys — inland, wooded, and quieter than the Sound-side towns. They’re the right choice when you want a nature-focused day: Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining is one of Westchester’s finest nature preserves, with a wildlife museum, a lakeside trail, and educational programming for grandkids. And just south in Pleasantville, the Jacob Burns Film Center shows first-run and classic films in a beautifully restored theater, and Rockefeller State Park Preserve is minutes from town.

Neither is a theme-park destination. Both reward the kind of day that doesn’t move fast.

Ossining

Teatown Lake Reservation

A 1,000-acre nature preserve centered on a 15-acre lake — one of Westchester County’s finest conservation areas. The Nature Center has live animal exhibits (turtles, snakes, raptors) that grandkids reliably want to see, and the lake trail is flat, manageable, and stroller-friendly for the first mile. Seasonal programming includes guided nature walks, bird-watching, and children’s education programs. Free to enter the grounds; donations welcome. Parking is free.

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the lake trail and nature center.

Louis Engel Waterfront Park

A Hudson River waterfront park in Ossining with a fishing pier, open lawn, and river views. Different character from Teatown — more open and breezy, good for an afternoon wind-down after a morning in the nature preserve. Free, easy parking.

Pleasantville

Rockefeller State Park Preserve

1,400 acres of former Rockefeller estate with wide carriage roads that are ideal for grandparent-grandkid walking. Completely flat on the main loops, stroller-accessible, and extraordinarily beautiful in every season. Swan Lake overlook is the signature stop. Nominal parking fee.

Jacob Burns Film Center

A beloved independent cinema in downtown Pleasantville — two screens, a programming calendar that includes family series, documentaries, and first-run films. The theater is restored art-deco, comfortable, and nothing like a multiplex. Check the family film schedule on their website; the matinee screenings for younger audiences are excellent. Tickets should be purchased in advance.

Graham Hills Park

700 acres of woodland trails in Pleasantville with well-marked paths, picnic areas, and a mountain bike circuit. Good for grandkids who like hiking on real terrain (not just flat carriage roads). The trails vary in difficulty; the lower loop is manageable for younger children and slower walkers.

Southern Table Kitchen & Bar

The best-reviewed full-service restaurant in Pleasantville — a comfortable American bistro with a menu that covers all preferences. Good spot for lunch after Rockefeller State Park or before a Jacob Burns showing. Parking is easy on the surrounding streets.

Practical Notes

Best Ossining day: Teatown Lake Reservation (morning) → lunch at Ossining village → Louis Engel Waterfront Park (afternoon).

Best Pleasantville day: Rockefeller State Park Preserve (morning) → Southern Table (lunch) → Jacob Burns (afternoon matinee).

Combined two-town day: Teatown (morning) → drive to Pleasantville → Southern Table (lunch) → Rockefeller Park (afternoon walk).

Age range: Both towns work for all ages. Teatown’s live animal exhibits are especially good for toddlers and young children.
